This free webinar features a presentation from Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Felicity Ferguson, on managing facial eczema, followed by a Q&A with a panel of dermatology experts at the forefront of eczema research and practice.

Dr Ferguson will cover the different presentations and common causes of facial eczema and focus on best management strategies. They will cover skincare techniques, identifying and avoiding triggers and the latest treatment options available to patients. This talk will provide practical, evidence-based advice to help attendees effectively control their symptoms and minimise flare-ups in this sensitive area of the body.

National Eczema Society and St John’s DermAcademy are pleased to collaborate to bring you this free webinar. There will be time after the talks for you to ask questions of the speakers.

Professor Flohr holds the Chair in Dermatology and Population Health Science at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, King’s College London, and is Head of Paediatric and Population-Based Dermatology Research.

Carsten Flohr studied at Cambridge and Oxford Universities and then trained in both paediatrics and dermatology.

He was the first UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinician Scientist in Dermatology (2009-2014) and the first dermatologist to be awarded a Career Development Fellowship from the NIHR (2014-2019).

He has a particular interest in novel methods of atopic dermatitis (AD) prevention (early life risk factors), how AD links in with food allergies and therapeutics, especially in severe AD.

He was Chief Investigator of the UK-Irish Treatment of severe eczema in children trial, (TREAT), which compared cyclosporine with methotrexate in children with recalcitrant atopic eczema. He is also Chief Investigator of the Softened water for eczema prevention trial (SOFTER) and the UK-Irish Atopic Eczema Systemic Therapy Register (A-STAR), as well as the EU-funded BIOMAP and Trans-Foods consortia.

Professor Flohr is a founding Director of the International Eczema Council and Past President of the British Society of Paediatric Dermatology, as well as an Honorary Member of the Société Française de Dermatologie.

He co-lead the European (EuroGuiDerm/European Dermatology Forum) management guidelines for the atopic dermatitis, Founding Editor of the Evidence-Based Dermatology Section of the British Journal of Dermatology and the Clinical Trials Editor of the F1000 Atopic Dermatitis Section.

Speaker: Dr Felicity Ferguson, Consultant Dermatologist, St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St St Thomas’ Foundation Trust

Dr Ferguson is a Consultant Dermatologist at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.  She specialises in Cutaneous Allergy and works within the Severe Eczema service, managing adults with moderate to very severe eczema. She completed her registrar training in Manchester, before undertaking the inaugural Post CCT Fellowship in Cutaneous Allergy at the Institute in 2018. She maintains a key interest in medical education and has a postgraduate certificate in teaching, as well as medical leadership.

Carsten directs the unit for population-based dermatology research at St John’s Institute of Dermatology. His department has a particular interest in population-based dermatology research and clinical trials with a focus on atopic eczema.

Panellist: Dr Mary Sommerlad, Consultant Dermatologist

Dr Mary Sommerlad is a UK trained, Consultant Dermatologist based in London. She studied medicine at University College London (UCL) where she obtained a First Class intercalated BSc in Immunology at UCL and was awarded the British Society of Immunology Undergraduate Prize. During her time as a medical student, she obtained the Prize for Society & the Individual. She graduated from UCL with a Merit in Clinical Practice and undertook rigorous training programmes in London and the South-East.

She is passionate about promoting patient and allied healthcare professional engagement and inclusivity. Dr Mary has given expert Dermatology advice on the BBC Series “Skin”, creating a GP Practice Nurse training programme and a series of patient education videos available on YouTube and she is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists BAME task force.

Panellist: Dr Ella Guest, Chartered Psychologist, Senior Research Fellow

Dr Ella Guest is a Senior Research Fellow and Registered Health Psychologist based at the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol. Ella’s research relates to understanding the impact of living with health conditions that affect appearance, with a particular focus dermatological conditions including eczema. She also has an interest in exploring how individuals with health conditions use social media and whether it can be used as an effective tool to increase acceptance of appearance diversity and reduce appearance-related stigma. Ella has also worked alongside the charity Eczema Outreach Support to develop self-management care plans and wellbeing resources for children with eczema.

Panellist: Andrew Proctor, Chief Executive, National Eczema Society

Andrew Proctor leads National Eczema Society as it’s Chief Executive. The charity provides information and advice for people living with eczema and their support systems, raises awareness of the condition, supports research and campaigns for better care. Andrew contributes patient experience for a number of research projects, including the BEACON and BEACON-omics trials.

He believes passionately in people having the right information and advice to make informed choices about their health, and in supporting people to self-manage their health conditions effectively. Andrew has a particular interest in digital, which he sees as playing an increasingly important role in healthcare and in helping National Eczema Society reach more people affected by eczema. He is inspired by the Society’s many members, donors, partners and other stakeholders who work so hard to improve the quality of life for people with eczema.
